My Gabriel, the Alchemist!

Last night I went to bed listening to  The Alchemist audio book playing on my laptop with one candle lit on my nightstand.  My 11 year old, Gabriel, who is my cancer survivor laid in my bed listening to the story with me.  It's no surprise to me Gabriel is so into this type of literture.

I remember the day he we born, one crisp day in October.  It was beautiful.  The sun was shining with just the right breeze.  It was my birthing day.  Justin, my oldest was 1 years old and active.  He handed me a baby doll and said, "Baby..." when I explained to him we were going to the hospital for his little brother to be born.  He understood.  This made me smile.  Throughout my last trimester I explored literature discovering ways to communicate to my Justin he was going to be a big brother. Most books said he was too young but I knew I could get him to understand.  I used a baby doll around the house pretending to change it, making it cry, holding it and occasionally telling him to use his quiet voice because the baby was sleeping.

All the while unborn Gabriel was very gentle in the womb. I knew he would be a very insightful kid.  It's amazing all we can learn about our children during pregnancy.  After his entry into this world Gabriel just looked around taking everything in.  Not sure what he could see but his mind was going.  Gabriel is the kid who at just the right moment will bring me a note which says something profound.  When he was four he found a button in the house, brought it to me when I was crying, it said 'Smile.'

He is very intuitive.  He's my little Alchemist.  The Alchemist by Paulo Ceolo is one of my favorite books.  It's a parable - a story with life lessons.  It's full of treasures about life's journey.  It shows how everything in life - the good, the bad and even the ugly - works for us to reach our destiny in life.  How setbacks are setups for us to reach our purpose. My Gabriel is learning this all now at 11 years old.  He's overcome cancer, divorce and homelessness. I can't wait to see the man he is growing into.
